Medusa Broken on the Wheel

It has become important for me to draw attention to this aspect of the perception of women and the associated anxiety factors in my new works. On the smaller and medium-sized wheels of fate displayed in the space, I process the stories of archaic, mythological female archetypes that exist in collective memory, drawing parallels with contemporary female destinies.

One of the figures that appears is Medusa, which served as my starting point. In mainstream culture, we usually only know her as a monstrous woman who turns men to stone with her gaze, and then Perseus beheads her. However, according to Medusa’s origin story, she was a beautiful priestess who rejected men until she became a victim of sexual violence by Poseidon. Instead of punishing the god, Medusa was transformed into a monster.
